In the year 1721 the peace agreed at Nystad in Finland brought an end to the war between Sweden and Russia. Karl XII was long dead, he had been killed at Frederikshald during an attempt to seize Norway. Having left Stockholm at the end of the previous century, he never returned to his capital – at least not alive.
