SCARLETT
I looked behind my shoulder. It was the girl from the vehicle. Where had she appeared from again?
“You…” I gasped.
She steadied me. “Get a grip, girl. You don't want to be singled out on your first day.”
I swallowed back the rest of my words.
The Lycan Alpha was nearing where I stood and my heart was pounding hard. I dipped my head.
He stopped before me and lingered.
Dear moon goddess, make him go please…
“Look up,” he ordered and I froze.
Seemed I prayed too late to the goddess.
Slowly, I raised my face.
His eyes pinched. He tilted his head and regarded me.
I kept my face plain, ready and determined to quickly deny if he so much as brought up the night at the club. As long as everything was concerned, that night never happened.
Then he spun without another word.
“Take them to their quarter,” he commanded.
Together with the Lycan elders, he strode off.
Huh? Didn't he recognize me?
Perhaps I was too early to think the moon goddess didn't answer my prayer.
But how possible was it that he couldn't recognize me? It baffled me but it was to my own advantage that he didn't.
You should be glad, why question?
We were led to our quarters where we were meant to stay. They called it the werewolves quarters. A two storeyed building.
There were a lot of other werewolf girls already there. They neither looked pleased to see us nor angry as they got about their duties. Or maybe it was I that was overthinking it.
A group of women were there to accept us on our arrival. There were six of them. Two elderly ones and three younger ones.
They stood on the squared podium and addressed us.
“My name is Mamie and I am the senior head here. That is what you must call me. With me here are my fellow heads. Welcome girls. Now this is the werewolf quarters as you can see and here, we all are one,” one of the elderly heads spoke.
“You must treat the girls who have been here before you with respect. No fighting, no bullying and no stealing,” she paused and her eyes roomed over us before she continued. “Remember, we all are the Lycan Alpha’s women. We belong to him and you know what that means? You must answer to his call at any time. You must serve him when he gives the command.”
“How about the Lycan elders? Do we answer their call as well?” A voice boomed from our midst.
And while a few others tried to shush the girl that had dared to speak up, I noticed a stricken look in the faces of the women. Especially the younger ones.
Murmurings broke out and the girls began to argue each picking sides. While some argued that they had heard the lycan elders claimed some of the werewolf women, others strongly disagreed.
“Silence!” Mamie bellowed and immediately order was restored.
“For now, these women will split you into groups and you will be shown to your various rooms. Also, you will be added to the duty roasters. For your personal time, you can decide to do what you please with it but the rules of the quarter must be adhered to. Make sure to check the rules. And finally, when you hear the sound of the bell, you must gather here from wherever you are.”
This place was almost like a prison. The only difference was the change of names and the freedom to wear whatever you wished.
The women started to pick out the girls that will follow them using headcount. Each picked four girls.
“You , you, you and you…. follow me.”
I didn't realize I had been counted until the woman turned and screamed at me.
“You! I said follow me. Where is your mind. Do you think you are still at Silver Fang?”
I muttered a quick apology and scampered after her.
Well, she was right. I had momentarily forgotten I was not at silver Fang anymore.
As we climbed the stairs, I imagined all of us having our own rooms and washrooms.
But colour me shocked when we were led into a room same size as my room at Silver Fang and were told it was our assigned room.
“This is your room, the four of you. I will be your direct Head and you shall call me Chloe.”
I looked around. One small bed that could barely fit one person let alone the four of us. I followed the direction I thought the washroom would be while praying that we won't need to share a bathroom with the rest of the girls downstairs. I was relieved when I saw we had one attached to the room although very tiny.
Still better than sharing one with the others.
“This is rubbish! This is different from what I imagined,” one of my new roommates gritted when Chloe left. “Why do we have to stuff ourselves in one room?”
“Shouldn't they treat us better than this? I really miss home. It's all the fault of my mate. He should have found me. Right now it feels worthless being a virgin without a mate,” the second one said and let out a deep hiss.
The third girl sighed. “You think they would feed us at all. We'd probably be starved to death. I was a fool for expecting something better. Well, as for me, all I can hope for is to find favour in the eyes of the lycan Alpha and I will gladly leave this shit hole.”
I imagined how it would be so crampy. And if one or two of the girls were troublemakers, we would all be damned.
“Shouldn't we introduce ourselves?” the second girl suggested. “I am Camie.”
“I am Joy,” said the first girl.
“Well, I am Louisa,” the third one said.
“Oi ambitious girl. You are not saying anything. You must fancy here. Since your boyfriend left you, this is the perfect place to cry yourself to death or something,” Joy directed at me mockingly.
“Mamie said no bullying,” Camie admonished.
“I ain't bullying her, dummy!” Joy hissed.
I ignored her scorn and introduced myself nevertheless. “I am Scarlett.”
“Well, let's all get along and save our energy on trying to survive this shit hole.”
We were about to take a vote on how to clean our room when we heard the sound of the bell. Recalling Mamie’s words, we abandoned it and hurried downstairs.
While going down, I bumped into the mysterious girl from the vehicle.
“I'm planning on going back to Silver Fang. In case you are interested, let me know and I will take you along,” she said hurriedly, glancing around as if someone was either after her or she was running from someone.
“How do I reach you…”
But she had already vanished before I finished.
I sighed and ran to join the other girls.
The guy I had seen earlier with lycan Alpha was standing on the podium with Mamie. We were asked to file according to our various rooms. He said something to Mamie and next Mamie pointed to my line. His eyes roamed over us as if he was searching for something or someone.
“That's the Lycan Beta. He is handsome. If I miss the lycan Alpha, then he is for me,” Camie said dreamily.
The Lycan Beta started towards our line. My mind skipped. Why was he coming to our line?
“You, follow me,” he pointed at me.
My eyes bulged. “Me?”
“Yes,” he said and started to walk.
My legs refused to move. So many thoughts bombarded my head.
Why was the Lycan beta calling me? They said it was the lycan elders that picked up werewolf girls. Why was he taking me away? Where was he taking me to? Why isn't Mamie saying anything and watching him take me away…
When I finally realized myself, he had stopped feets from me and was shooting me a look that finally charged up my reluctant legs.
I pranced after him and I could hear the girls murmuring as we left.
“Please where are you taking me to?” I finally summoned courage to ask.
“To the lycan Alpha.”
“Okay…what? Lycan Alpha.” I screeched to a stop.
He equally stopped and frowned. Then his face lightened. He must have sensed my fear.
“You don't need to worry. The Lycan Alpha does not fancy werewolf ladies. You only need to serve his drinks and maybe a couple of errands.”
