C6 Kneel Down!
Huo Mengmeng was an adopted child of the Leng family. As Old Master Leng Zhenchuan put it, Leng Huaiqing was her elder brother. However, with a twelve-year age gap and Huaiqing's perpetually stern demeanor, coupled with his strict discipline, their relationship lacked the typical warmth of siblings and instead felt distant and awkward.
Since her adoption, Mengmeng had never seen Huaiqing smile. He always wore an icy expression, as if someone owed him millions and hadn't paid him back. His eyes, deep and black as the ocean, held a sharpness akin to an eagle's, piercing enough to see through anything. It sent shivers down Mengmeng's spine, preventing her from meeting his gaze.
Over time, this fear became second nature to her. Whenever Mengmeng encountered Huaiqing, she felt like a mouse in the presence of a cat. She vividly remembered a high school incident when her playful nature made her forget to return his call. The consequence was a two-month confinement to her room over the summer break—a memory that still haunted her.
Suddenly, the sound of a car door locking pierced the quiet outside. With her keen hearing, Mengmeng sprang from the couch and scurried to the foyer. As Huaiqing crossed the threshold, she eagerly presented the slippers she had prepared for him.
"Brother, you must be exhausted after such a late return. You're probably starving. I'll have Mrs. Zhang warm up your dinner right away. Just a moment!" Mengmeng hoped to shift Huaiqing's focus with her attentiveness.
But he saw right through her ploy and dismissed it without a hint of warmth. "We won't eat just yet. Follow me to the study," he commanded.
With a drawn-out, reluctant "Oh," Mengmeng had no choice but to trail behind Huaiqing to the study, dutifully closing the door behind them.
"Kneel!"
Leng Huaiqing's icy command sent a shiver down Huo Mengmeng's spine, her body trembling involuntarily.
Without a moment's hesitation, she dropped to her knees with a thud, her practiced motion heartbreakingly adept.
Overwhelmed by fear, Huo Mengmeng dared not lift her gaze, shrinking into herself like a startled kitten.
Where was the pride and defiance she had displayed when confronting Xiao Anan earlier that day?
Leng Huaiqing let out a derisive snort, his voice laced with mocking sarcasm, "So, you think you can hit people now? Quite the audacious move!"
In Leng Huaiqing's presence, Huo Mengmeng felt utterly spineless.
Her hands instinctively flew to her ears, and with her head bowed, she murmured a feeble apology, "I'm sorry, Brother, I was wrong..."
"You're wrong? No, you're not wrong!" Leng Huaiqing shook his head with a detached expression, "You are the esteemed adopted daughter of the Leng family, the treasured granddaughter Old Master Leng often speaks of. How could you be at fault?"
His words were laced with an icy chill and severity.
Clearly, he was being sarcastic!
Realizing that Leng Huaiqing was truly upset, Huo Mengmeng didn't dare provoke him further.
She drew her neck in and hurriedly began to self-criticize, "I was wrong. I shouldn't have hit someone without thinking, I shouldn't have refused to apologize, and most of all, I shouldn't have embarrassed you..."
But as she continued, Huo Mengmeng's voice grew fainter, betraying her mounting sense of guilt.
