C3 Don't Know What's Good for You
Xiao Chen walked up to Xiaoli, his long fingers reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. But Xiaoli pulled away, her clear eyes glaring at him with anger.
Instead of getting upset, Xiao Chen's gentle smile remained unchanged. "Still giving me the cold shoulder? You better calm down."
"Who's giving you the cold shoulder?" Xiaoli retorted with a cold smile. "Is this your idea of professional ethics? If you were truly just, you would have arrested him by now!"
The officer frowned. If it weren't for Xiao Chen's unusual attitude toward this woman, she would have been arrested long ago, instead of being allowed to rant here.
"Lady, don't push your luck."
"Leave it," Xiao Chen said with a smile. "Stop causing trouble, be good."
The police left, and Xiaoli didn't try to stop them, perhaps knowing it would be futile.
A graceful piano melody filled the air as Xiao Chen answered his phone, speaking a few words before slipping it back into his pocket. His smile remained gentle, but his gaze carried a hint of warning as he looked at Xiaoli. "Stay put, Xiaoli. Don't entertain any foolish ideas of escape."
His long fingers placed a gold card in Xiaoli's hand. "This is my estate's gold card. If you need anything, reach out to me."
With that, Xiao Chen left, his arrival as casual as his departure was carefree.
Xiaoli watched him disappear, her grip tightening until the gold card bent out of shape. In anger, she tossed it into the trash, cursing him silently over and over.
Outside, the birds sang more cheerfully, but Xiaoli's mood grew darker.
Suddenly, a scream pierced the air.
"Late again!"
Rushing into the hospital, Xiaoli was trying to figure out how to explain herself to the supervisor when she noticed her colleague's surprised expression. "Xiaoli, didn't you take the day off?"
Xiaoli was taken aback. She didn't remember requesting any leave.
Seeing her confusion, the colleague added, "This morning, a man called in using your phone to request leave for you. The supervisor agreed without a second thought and even told you to rest well."
Xiaoli quickly pulled out her phone, and sure enough, the last call was to the supervisor.
Could it be... Xiao Chen?
"I might be imagining things, but that guy's voice sounded just like Xiao Chen's, the one who's always on TV."
Xiaoli caught onto something and asked eagerly, "You know Xiao Chen?"
Her colleague rolled her eyes, a dreamy look crossing her pretty face. "Who doesn't know Xiao Chen? The richest guy in the city, barely in his twenties, yet already so powerful and, let's be honest, incredibly handsome... the dream guy for countless girls! He's definitely mine!"
No wonder the police changed their attitude the moment they saw his face.
Xiaoli pressed her lips together, feeling a mix of anger and despair. She had wanted to report him, but given the circumstances, was she supposed to just swallow her pride?
"By the way, Xiaoli, that call didn't sound like your boyfriend," her colleague teased, a hint of jealousy flashing in her eyes.
"Why don't you focus on your work instead of meddling in other people's business?" Xiaoli snapped, her expression shifting as she turned to leave.
Right, she had a boyfriend. He was the one she should be explaining last night's events to.
But how could she bring it up? Run over and say she was assaulted?
Xiaoli frowned, her mind in turmoil as she wandered the streets. It was only then she noticed that nearly every corner was plastered with news about Xiao Chen. Apparently, she was the only one out of the loop.
With a bitter smile, she realized there was no place for her in this vast world. The bag in her hand vibrated at the most inconvenient time, followed by the sound of elegant music. Xiaoli pressed her lips together tightly—he had even changed her ringtone! She slowly pulled the phone from her bag, her anxiety growing as she saw the name flashing on the screen—Xiao Jie.
