C14 On the First Day of Work
After sitting down, Qianqian's eyes drifted back to Shaowen's personal profile. Every fiscal year, Shaowen shared the head table with Yechen at the annual company meeting—a unique honor that only Shaowen had enjoyed so far. This clearly showed his importance in the company and to Yechen.
Soon, Yechen emerged from his office, glanced at Qianqian, who was focused on her computer, and said softly, "Let's go grab some lunch."
Lunch? Qianqian instinctively glanced at her watch, thinking to herself, "Isn't it a bit early?"
"Yes, I'll be right there." Without much time to ponder, Qianqian quickly stuffed everything on her desk into her bag, snapped her laptop shut, and dashed out of the office with it in her arms.
Before long, a limited edition Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of the company. Qianqian joined Yechen in the spacious back seat.
Watching them leave together, the male assistant clenched his fists in frustration, upset that he couldn't join them. After all, which boss would take a male secretary to a lunch meeting? Naturally, having a female secretary was more impressive!
At that moment, the male assistant began to resent his own circumstances and grew increasingly envious of Qianqian. He had even tried to set her up to fail in front of Director Leng, hoping she'd make a mistake. Yet, to his surprise, Director Leng didn't get angry. In the past, other assistants and secretaries would have been fired for less, but here was Qianqian, calmly accompanying Director Leng to meet clients.
When they arrived, Qianqian finally understood what it meant to show restraint. Seeing the array of fine wines, she could only think, "This is such a waste!" For someone with a sensitive stomach, it was pure torture.
When Leng Yechen arrived, the department heads who had been waiting for some time quickly stood up, nodding in acknowledgment. Leng Yechen took his seat at the head of the table, with Xie Shaowen, the Marketing Director, the Financial Director, the Administrative Director, the Human Resources Director, and others seated in order.
Xu Qianqian stood dutifully behind Leng Yechen, ready to assist whenever needed. As the server prepared to open the wine, Xu Qianqian quickly retrieved a wine glass from her bag, so clear it seemed almost invisible, replacing the restaurant's glass.
Leng Yechen had a peculiar habit: no matter where he went, he only drank from his own glass. Xu Qianqian often thought he must have been poisoned using a glass in a past life! Having a quirk was one thing, but his glasses were expensive—either custom-made or incredibly luxurious, mostly made of glass. Every time she brought one for him, she had to be extremely careful. If one broke, it could cost her half a month's salary.
Seeing his personal wine glass, Leng Yechen raised an eyebrow with satisfaction. The woman who once caused him to fall flat on his face was now devoted to serving him. It felt good.
After the server poured the fine wine into a decanter, they handed it to Xu Qianqian, as these high-profile individuals all had a dislike for people getting too close. Once, Leng Yechen had detected a strange smell on a server and had them fired on the spot. Since then, all servers kept their distance to avoid any unpleasant scents.
Xu Qianqian poured a third of the wine into Leng Yechen's glass first, then continued around the table. When she reached Xie Shaowen's glass, his large hand gently stopped hers. "I don't drink, thank you," he said.
Upon hearing this, Qianqian suddenly understood what he meant earlier that afternoon. So, when he mentioned going easy, this is what he was referring to?
"Yes." Qianqian set down her wine glass, and the two exchanged a knowing smile, sharing an unspoken understanding.
Watching their silent communication and seeing their hands clasped together, Yechen's gaze darkened slightly. Had Qianqian forgotten her responsibilities? She was his personal secretary, and her priority should always be his interests alone.
"Director Xie, it's rare for you to be back. This is our company's annual dinner. If you don't drink, it won't be as fun."
"Exactly, you only come back once a year. Not sharing a drink with us is just no fun."
"You won't drink even when such a beautiful secretary pours you a glass? That's a bit disrespectful, don't you think?"
"Come on, you all know Director Xie never drinks. What's the point in forcing him? Waiter, just get him a glass of water." Zhang Nan, the Human Resources Director, played the peacemaker, defusing the pressure to drink.
And with that, the little drama over the drinks was settled. Since Qianqian didn't insist on Shaowen drinking, the others didn't push it either. After all, it's not worth offending someone over a meal.
