C14 My Sister Has Changed Her Personality
"No way, don't even think about it," Shuling said firmly.
For a moment, the yard was silent except for the heavy breathing of Shen Dazhuang. Lim Fuqing felt secretly pleased that his wife was standing up for him, and his expression relaxed.
"You... ungrateful daughter, not willing to help your brother."
"Help? Why should I help him? The money for his wedding came from the dowry Fuqing gave. I owe him nothing. Not long ago, I was struggling to the point of not having enough to eat. I sent word asking for some grain, and you didn't help. Now you remember you have a daughter?"
Shuling laid it all out in front of Fuqing, leaving Shen Dazhuang looking embarrassed and glaring at her. It was simply ungrateful! All she did was hurt her old father's heart.
Shen Zhong had a bit of self-awareness, knowing he was in no position to face his brother-in-law. He also thought the old man was being a bit much. Last time, his brother-in-law nearly got buried in a landslide while picking up goods in Hong Kong.
"Tell me, did this troublemaker get into something again?" Shuling asked, casting a sidelong glance at Shen Zhong. This kid had been a handful since he was little, getting into fights from the age of five or six, often making Shen Dazhuang go to people's houses to apologize with a smile.
Shen Dazhuang had worked his whole life, and all his savings went to Shen Zhong. He never approved of Fuqing's job of trading goods, so he certainly wouldn't ask Fuqing to find a job for Shen Zhong.
"I'm afraid the work is just an excuse; it's really about letting Lim Fuqing help Shen Zhong lay low for a while," someone pointed out, causing Shen Dazhuang's face to turn a bit pale.
Shen Zhong, having been kicked to the ground by Shen Shuling, looked up at her in shock. Since when did his sister start hitting people? And with such force?
"Ouch—my backside is probably bruised. That kick was really something," he thought.
Lim Fuqing, standing nearby, didn't spare a glance for his clueless brother-in-law. His attention was entirely on Shuling's foot. He knelt down, gently massaging her ankle, and said with concern, "Honey, don't get upset. If someone needs a kicking, let me handle it."
Shen Dazhuang was so frustrated by the couple's teamwork that he almost wanted to lash out. But he had to swallow his pride and ask his son-in-law to help his son avoid trouble with those lunatics.
It was just a scuffle between two guys, with some minor injuries. Why did it have to cost so much in compensation? It wasn't entirely Zhong's fault. Those people couldn't win the fight, so they faked injuries, went to the hospital for assessments, and even called the police! If we don't pay up, they'll have Zhong locked up.
Half of his life's savings were gone in an instant, and it still wasn't enough. That family wasn't satisfied and insisted on another round with Zhong.
Shen Dazhuang hurriedly took Shen Zhong to find his son-in-law, asking him to take Shen Zhong away for a while until the other family gave up and it was safe to return.
Shen Shuling felt even more frustrated. How could Shen Dazhuang, who had been so bold all his life, suddenly become so timid and afraid when it came to his son? Was he really that worried about Shen Zhong getting hurt?
What an old fool.
"Get up, I have questions for you." Shen Shuling said, holding a stick and pointing at Shen Zhong on the ground.
Shen Zhong was about to stand up when Shen Shuling kicked him again. "Just looking at you makes me angry. Stay kneeling."
Shen Zhong stumbled and fell to his knees, grimacing in pain.
Oh man, his sister had really changed.
She used to be so gentle. How did she become so fierce?
"Why were you fighting?"
Shen Zhong stayed silent, but after another hit with the stick, he mumbled, "That jerk said you were going to be a widow, that brother-in-law was dead."
There were even worse things he didn't want to repeat. Even though he knew the family had always favored him and that he and his sister weren't close, he had always liked her.
