C3 Abject Poverty(1)

The family moved hastily to the thatched cottage. It was an old hut that was more than ten years old and had several holes in the roof. It was unable to shelter from the wind and rain.

There were three rooms in the room, the middle room was more spacious, while the two beside it were narrower.

Inside, there was only a slanted wooden bed and a table and chair with missing arms and legs. They packed their things. Actually, there was nothing much to pack up. There was only a huge pot, five pairs of chopsticks, and a few quilts.

In the evening, Chen Yuelan cooked some brown rice and wild vegetables. The family did not give them anything, as this was all they had left.

Chen Yuelan did not cook much, and the two young ones ate their porridge sensibly, neither crying nor shouting about being hungry.

Xia Xinyan glanced at her little brother and sister, who were rubbing their stomachs, and their parents, who were sharing the small amount of porridge, and couldn't help but tighten her grip on her bamboo chopsticks.

"Mom, tomorrow I want to go up the mountain to pick some wild fruits and vegetables to supplement my family." It was unknown if it was because he was moved or because he was physically weak, but his throat was still uncomfortable and his voice was dry and astringent.

"I want to go with elder sister as well. There are a lot of wild vegetables at the back of the mountain. They're very tasty." Xia Rongrong quickly answered with a trace of excitement on her face.

"Your father and I will go. You two are still young." Chen Yuelan put down the bowl in her mouth and refused the two of them with a serious expression.

Xia Zhi understood her worry, smiling as she sat over to hold Chen Yuelan's arm and gently shook it, saying in a spoiled manner, "The back of the mountain is not far from our house, so mother, you can rest assured. We'll be back soon."

Chen Yuelan was still worried. Just as she was about to refuse again, Xia Dagang comforted Xia Rongrong, who looked dejected, and said with a smile, "Yuelan, just let them go. These kids are probably too bored at home."

Chen Yuelan thought long and hard, but after seeing her husband say this, she finally let go of her worries. She just spent the whole night telling them to be careful.

The next morning, Xia Dagang got up early and left. He had to reclaim the wasteland, hoping to grow some food. After the three of them had breakfast, they carried a few worn-out baskets up the mountain.

After arriving there, Xia Jing let the two young men stay at the place where others usually picked ferns, while he himself looked around to see if there were any other wild vegetables. After all, there were many treasures in the mountains, and when she was working in a business before, she had rented a whole mountain as a breeding ground.

As they walked, Xia Wei's gaze suddenly fell on a patch of green vegetables. She rubbed her eyes with all her might, and when she could see clearly again, she quickly called for people to come over: "Rongrong, quick, come over here!"

The two children rushed over at the sound and looked in puzzlement at the place where she had stopped. There were no fresh wild vegetables there?

"Sister, what is this?" Xia Zhiyan looked at the green grass in front of him blankly. He didn't understand why his sister would be so excited.

Xia squat down and said while picking: "This dish is delicious. It's good for the body and also filling the stomach."

After digging for a while, only Xia Zhiyan and the others were left to pick them. Xia Wei went to other places to look for them, but she did find celery, tooth vegetables and many other kinds of wild vegetables.

After asking, she found out that these were all inedible here, which was why she picked up the loopholes. In ancient times, it was worth nothing. However, this was a huge business opportunity, so she had to carefully think about how she could make money from this.

"Elder sister, should we go take a look at the mountain?" Xia Rongrong tugged on Xia Qingmei's sleeve, looking at her with a yearning expression on her face. Xia Rongrong was young, and Chen Yuelan was strict with her. She couldn't run around like a boy, so she had never been to the mountain before.

Xia Jing slightly raised his head, seeing that it was still early, he also wanted to go up the mountain to have a look. With a serious expression, he warned, "That's possible, but both of you are not allowed to run around. Follow me closely."

Although she was young, her grown-up expression convinced the two children, who followed closely behind her.

As the few of them went up the mountain, Xia Wei suddenly heard a burst of howling coming from somewhere. Was this a wild boar? Behind the bushes, the silhouette of a person could be faintly seen. Her expression suddenly changed. Why was there still someone there? Don't you know how to run!
