C10 A Silent Jade Pendant
Madam Qian brought Soong Bao'er back to her room, but Soong Qiu'er was worried while looking at Ah Mu. In a few days' time, where would she go to investigate the mystery of Ah Mu's background?
Looking at the man in front of her, Soong Qiu'er sighed softly. He felt rather relaxed. A memory loss had thrown everything to the back of his mind.
Suddenly, Soong Qiu'er felt her hand being lifted by Ah Mu. Ah Mu lowered his body and put Soong Qiu'er's palm on his head, rubbing against Soong Qiu'er's palm like he did that day.
This...
Soong Qiu'er didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Did Ah Mu use this method to comfort her after sensing that she was in a bad mood?
"Ah Mu, do you really not remember anything about yourself?" Soong Qiu'er asked while stroking Ah Mu's fluffy hair.
Ah Mu shook his head, the confusion in his eyes didn't seem like he was pretending. That day, Soong Qiu'er had picked up Ah Mu and saw with her own eyes how serious his injuries were. She did not hold any hope that Ah Mu would be able to recover his memories within a few days.
"Alright, let's eat first and think about what to do tomorrow." As Soong Qiu'er said this, she led Ah Mu into the house and the two heated up the remaining meat from the day before.
However, as Soong Qiu'er looked at Ah Mu's resolute expression, she gradually came up with an idea.
The next day, Soong Qiu'er dug out the 90 taels of silver that she had buried not long ago. She put it into her pocket, took a deep breath, and instructed Ah Mu to look after the house while she headed back to town.
This time, Soong Qiu'er's goal was the only pawn shop in town. The only thing on Ah Mu that could make people guess his identity was that jade pendant. If a small jade pendant could be sold for two hundred taels of silver, Soong Qiu'er was sure that this jade pendant was extraordinary.
"Where did this beggar come from? Get out!" Before Soong Qiu'er could get close to the pawnshop, she was chased along with a feather duster by a shop assistant standing by the door.
A beggar? Soong Qiu'er quickly thought.
Soong Bao'er didn't want all the clothes on her body. Although there were layers upon layers of pudding on top of each other, she carefully washed them clean before putting them on. Seeing that she was wearing shabby clothes, the employee thought that Soong Qiu'er wouldn't have anything of value and actually wanted to kick her out.
"I'm not a beggar." Soong Qiu'er looked at the employee and said seriously, "I have something to talk to your shopkeeper about."
"Where does our storekeeper have the time to bother with a beggar like you!" The sales clerk looked Soong Qiu'er up and down, pointing at her with disdain. "Look at your tattered body. Do you have anything valuable?"
Soong Qiu'er looked down at the shop assistant with disdain. However, when she was under the eaves, she had no choice but to lower her head. She took out a piece of silver from her pocket and waved it in front of the shop assistant as if she was going to throw it to the shop assistant.
Soong Qiu'er's actions might have been quick, but the employee could clearly see that it was a silver ingot that was at least three liang in value. His expression changed as he said, "Good girl, please sit inside for a moment. I'll get the shopkeeper to help you."
Soong Qiu'er nodded her head and walked into the pawnshop under the shop assistant's flattering gaze.
The pawn shop's decorations were simple and unadorned, with not the slightest bit of gold or silver decorations. Soong Qiu'er, however, could tell that the tables and chairs they used to entertain their customers were all of the finest mahogany.
Before long, the shop assistant who had just entered the backyard of the pawn shop returned to Soong Qiu'er with a middle-aged man. "Shopkeeper, this is the girl who wants to see you."
"Miss." The shopkeeper was the shopkeeper after all, unlike the shop assistant who used his looks to pick people out.
Even though Soong Qiu'er was dressed in shabby clothes, she had a pair of bright eyes. With just her eyes alone, the innumerable shopkeepers could tell that Soong Qiu'er was not the ordinary peasant daughter that her clothes indicated.
Soong Qiu'er ignored the worker's burning gaze as she looked at the shopkeeper, asking, "Shopkeeper, can I have a word with you?"
"You may leave." The shopkeeper said to the shop assistant.
Seeing that Soong Qiu'er didn't have any intention of giving him any money, the clerk, no matter how foolish he was, knew that he had been duped. He glared at Soong Qiu'er angrily and walked down the stairs.
At the corner of the pawnshop, there was only Soong Qiu'er and the shopkeeper. In front of the corner, there was a screen. Usually, the shop assistant and the customer were quite far from each other, as long as they didn't speak too loudly, no one would be able to hear them.
The shopkeeper looked at Soong Qiu'er's clothes and treated her as a guest who came to pawn. He asked, "Does Miss have any treasures to take on?"
Soong Qiu'er shook her head. "Did the shopkeeper receive a piece of jade a few days ago?"
"Jade pendant?" When the shopkeeper heard this word, a haze flashed in his eyes for an instant. "What did the lady say? My pawnshop receives quite a few things every day. I can't remember what it is even though I've asked for it all of a sudden. "
"Shopkeeper, please think about it carefully. A jade pendant worth two hundred taels of silver isn't something that can be found every day." Soong Qiu'er was almost certain that the shopkeeper knew about the jade pendant from the start, yet for some reason, he didn't tell her.
The shopkeeper waved his hand impatiently. "I am a pawn shop. If you have something to take it from me, just take it. If you want to redeem the pendant, just treat it as a ticket."
Soong Qiu'er was momentarily anxious. She took out the silver taels from her robes. "I know you are a businessman. I just want to know the origins of that jade pendant."
Who knew that the shopkeeper wouldn't change his attitude because of Soong Qiu'er taking out the silver. He raised his voice and said, "Men! Throw her out."
"I …" Soong Qiu'er refused to beg and whispered, "This jade pendant is very important to me. If you know of its origins, please tell me."
However, Soong Qiu'er's words couldn't change Manager's mind. He turned around as if he couldn't hear her.
If it wasn't for Soong Qiu'er's sharp observation skills, she would have been unable to notice the slight tremble in the shopkeeper's fingers that were concealed under his sleeve.
This scene made Soong Qiu'er want to say something, but she found that her arm had been grabbed.
When the shop assistant who had just led Soong Qiu'er in heard the shopkeeper's words, he immediately pushed Soong Qiu'er out with his hand, saying, "You shameless beggar, how dare you fool your father!"
How could Soong Qiu'er's petite stature withstand the pushing of the shop assistant? She was directly pushed out of the pawn shop by the shop assistant without even having the time to say a few words.
However, this way, Soong Qiu'er was even more sure that Ah Mu's identity was unusual.
This shopkeeper was obviously someone who knew what was good for him, but he didn't want to say anything to her. Soong Qiu'er could only turn around and think of a way to break through.
