My heart palpitated at the thought of Desmond being at our door. It wasn't clear whether stress or excitement was causing it.

“I’ll get the door.” Mom rubbed my back with her nurturing, tender touch. “Your mommy will make it all better and give your jerk ex-boyfriend a beating as well while she is at it.”
