C1 Mysterious Fortune Teller!(1)

Outside the main gate of Mingxing High School, a young man stood with a wooden sign held high, drawing the mockery of his fellow students streaming out of school.

"I'm a sex maniac!" the sign proclaimed in bold, forceful characters.

"Can you believe this guy? Who does he think he is, flaunting that around?"

"That's Niu Li. Who's picking on him this time?"

"He gets bullied every day. Poor kid."

Amidst the murmurs, Niu Li's face burned with shame and anger, dark circles evident under his eyes. His mouth twitched awkwardly as he endured the humiliation.

An ordinary person would have fled from such an ordeal, but Niu Li stood frozen, neither daring to drop the sign nor to escape.

As the crowd of onlookers thickened, a group pushed through to the front.

Their ringleader, a young girl with fiery red hair, was dressed provocatively and chewed gum nonchalantly.

She cackled at the sight of Niu Li's sign before declaring with glee, "We'll call it a day here. You've been a real sport."

With a flip of her hair, she sauntered off with her entourage.

Finally, Niu Li exhaled in relief, hastily setting down the sign and slinking away through the dispersing crowd.

After weaving through several backstreets, he paused to catch his breath, alone and unobserved.

With a surge of pent-up fury, he hurled the sign to the ground and stomped on it repeatedly, muttering, "One day, I'll make you pay a hundredfold."

This boy, Niu Li, could only express his frustration in solitude. At fifteen, he was a sophomore at Mingxing High School, tall and broad for his age at 1.7 meters. Yet, his timid nature made him an easy target for bullies.

He was a walking embodiment of misfortune.

Niu Li longed to change, but the mere sight of a hostile glare left him feeling hollow inside.

He swallowed insults until his cheeks burned, too timid to talk back. And when struck, he'd go weak in the knees. This only emboldened his tormentors and diminished his own dignity. His height, it seemed, was wasted on him.

Today, he found himself standing here, all thanks to Lee Mengmeng, a well-known figure at Mingxing High School.

Despite her short stature, Lee Mengmeng had a powerful ally in her older brother, the infamous young boss of H City, Scarface Lee!

Scarface Lee had made a name for himself in H City by wildly slashing thirteen people with a kitchen knife. Now, he reigned as the revered godfather of the mafia, commanding respect and fear throughout H City.

Niu Li, on the receiving end of bullying from someone with such a formidable background, felt powerless to fight back. He could only silently hope that his family would remain unharmed.

After releasing some of his frustration, Niu Li glanced around nervously, making sure no one had witnessed him. He quickly disposed of the wooden board in a trash bin, then turned and slipped into a side street.

He aimlessly wandered the streets, too afraid to return home. The prominent dark circles under his eyes would surely draw unwanted attention and criticism from his parents.

As dusk fell, the night market began to bustle with activity, and crowds started to gather around the various street vendors.

"Come, let me predict your future. I can help you find good luck, avert misfortune, and draw in wealth. If my predictions are off, you're free to wreck my stall!"

This melodious and enticing call captured Niu Li's attention.

Although Niu Li knew these streets like the back of his hand, he had never encountered a fortune teller here before.

The unexpected sight of a fortune teller piqued Niu Li's curiosity.

He edged closer to the stall at the crossroads, where a fortune-telling setup was unmistakable: an eight-trigram cloth draped over a long table, behind which sat the White Beard Elder, donning sunglasses and a long robe, energetically hawking his services.

Niu Li, intrigued, approached the stall and took a seat. "Old man, how do you tell fortunes?"

Seeing a potential customer, the fortune teller perked up. "I can divine your future from the characters you write, or by feeling your bones. I can also perform Positioning to predict your fate."

Niu Li, puzzled, inquired, "I'm familiar with the first two methods, but what exactly is Positioning?"

The fortune teller flashed a knowing smile. "Given my level of skill, I can only perform it once a day. This particular reading costs 666 RMB, and the price is firm!"

Niu Li was astounded. He could earn 666 RMB for each fortune-telling session. If he only did one session a day, he'd still rake in nearly 20,000 RMB a month. Fortune-telling sure was a lucrative business!

"Old man, fortune-telling is nothing more than words of comfort. Aren't you being a bit too greedy?" Niu Li's own troubles momentarily slipped from his mind as he chastised the unscrupulous soothsayer.

"Just words of comfort?" The fortune-teller lifted his head with an air of arrogance. "Would you like me to cast a fortune for you? If my predictions don't come true, you won't owe me a penny!"

"Fine," Niu Li agreed, "use my handwriting for the fortune-telling."

"Write it down," the fortune-teller instructed, removing his glasses. He was completely blind.

A pang of sympathy struck Niu Li. "Old man, what happened to your eyes?"

"I was born blind, no need for astonishment. Just write quickly and tell me the character," the fortune-teller responded, his demeanor serene and detached.

Niu Li bent down and penned a single character on the white paper spread out on the table.

It was now just past seven in the evening. Summer evenings arrived late, and the sky was dimming.

A thought struck Niu Li, and he wrote the character for "Noon."

With darkness enveloping them, Niu Li wondered, how would the fortune-teller interpret "Noon"?
