Irene's so-called spacious spot turned out to be a wooden shack by a lake in Donglin City.

The area was sizable, but far from picturesque. The cobbled-together wooden houses hardly inspired confidence in their safety, let alone lived up to Irene's description of Donglin's finest accommodations.

But as the afternoon waned and the crowd swelled, they had no choice but to settle in
