C12 Why Is My Mom so Nice?

One of the more curious onlookers stood next to Jiaojiao, glancing between her and Mrs. Zhao, whose mouth was covered. "Hey, Mrs. Zhao, why aren't you saying anything?"

Jiaojiao smoothly replied, "Oh, my mom accidentally bit her lip. It's quite a cut, so she can't really talk right now."

"How did that happen?"

Jiaojiao mentally gave a thumbs-up to her impromptu teammate for playing along. "Well, my mom heard I got married and got so excited. She said she prepared a lot of things for me as a kind of apology for not having a dowry."

"Oh, there's no need for such formalities between family. A dowry isn't necessary, but my mom insisted."

"I tried to refuse, but she got so worked up that she accidentally bumped into a stone roller. There was so much blood, it scared me to death! What could I do? I had to agree with her."

"It's just that she prepared so much stuff, we couldn't carry it all to our place. So now, my mom is taking Zhibing and me to get it. Isn't she just the sweetest? By the way, who are you?"

"???" You're talking about a Mrs. Zhao I don't recognize.

Yet Jiaojiao looked at him with such innocent eyes and even smiled a little.

The person suddenly felt a bit dizzy.

"Well, you never know."

Wasn't Pengcheng's previous wife a bit tongue-tied? Mrs. Zhao's first three daughters-in-law were all smooth talkers, always flattering and saying nice things, yet they weren't well-liked. But this new daughter-in-law is different. Her chatter is so pleasant to listen to that he didn't even notice what she was saying. Pengcheng is really lucky.

His previous wife might have been a bit quiet, but she was educated, beautiful, and took good care of the kids and the house. Now, this new one is just as pretty and quite the talker. Every word she says praises Mrs. Zhao. It wouldn't be surprising if Mrs. Zhao, in her delight, ended up giving her something.

People's emotions were written all over their faces—jealousy, envy, resentment, disdain, all mixed together.

Jiaojiao suddenly felt that although this era was still quite backward, it wasn't so bad after all. Her earlier gloomy mood began to lift.

The person, eager to gossip, blurted out, "I'm Zhao's tree," and ran off, forgetting to mention his own rank in the family.

Once he was gone, Zhibing glanced around and whispered to Jiaojiao, "Don't bother with him in the future. He's just a troublemaker, a real piece of work."

Jiaojiao smiled at the child who was earnestly advising her and nodded. Mrs. Zhao wanted to speak, but she couldn't. Her arms were pinned, and any attempt to struggle caused excruciating pain. She couldn't fathom where this cunning girl had learned such tricky methods.

As they got closer to home, Mrs. Zhao began to panic. Was this girl really going to take things from her house? No way! Those were meant for her eldest grandson!

But it was no use. She could only watch helplessly as this shameless girl, who should have met her end long ago, dragged her toward her house. Just as Jiaojiao was forcefully pulling her into the yard, Mrs. Zhao suddenly remembered that her eldest daughter-in-law was home today and hadn't gone to the fields!

Her eyes lit up with hope. Ignoring the pain in her arms, she struggled harder, making muffled sounds as she tried to call for help. Jiaojiao glanced at her and suddenly let go.
