C14 I Have a Bad Temper!
Before leaving, they accepted the two sickles, of course, not wanting to refuse the kind gesture of the generous lady. Mrs. Zhao watched them walk away with a mix of frustration and helplessness, unable to move from her fall and even unable to speak, tears of anger welling up in her eyes.
Yuh Jiaojiao and Zhao Zhibing happily carried the iron pot, a chicken, and the two sickles. By this time, many people were heading home to prepare dinner. Seeing them with their hands full, some folks were a bit puzzled, while others couldn't help but glance repeatedly at Jiaojiao.
Seeing Zhao Zhibing with Jiaojiao, some of the older women with unmarried sons at home tried to strike up a conversation, hoping she might take an interest in their sons. "Zhibing, who is this? Is she your sister?"
Jiaojiao's name was well-known in the nearby villages, but not everyone had seen her. She was truly a sight to behold, fitting the current beauty standards with her double eyelids, big eyes, thick eyebrows, high nose bridge, and small mouth. Her face was a classic oval shape. Her figure was neither frail nor overly robust like some rural girls who worked too hard. She had just the right amount of curves, suggesting she was both capable and healthy.
In short, she had the kind of looks that could grace a TV screen of the time, with a shapely figure that hinted at strength and vitality.
The original person might have lacked some sophistication due to limited perspective and knowledge, but now, as Yuh Jiaojiao, a barely elite corporate worker, her confident and poised demeanor sets her apart from others. Of course, holding a large pot at the moment does look quite amusing.
Yuh Jiaojiao glanced at the woman speaking, "I am..."
Zhao Zhibing quickly interjected, "Auntie, this is my mom! Not my sister."
Even though he wasn't thrilled about having a new mom, this new mom seemed pretty decent so far. For now, she was part of the Zhao family, and he wasn't going to let anyone take advantage of his family.
Yuh Jiaojiao: "!!!"
Everyone else: "!!!"
Zhao Zhibing's words were like a drop of water hitting a hot pan, causing a stir among the crowd.
"Zhao Pengcheng got married again?"
"Even the widow from the neighboring town didn't want to marry him because of his four kids?"
"Exactly, even his own mother didn't approve, and yet he found such a good wife? I just can't believe it."
Yuh Jiaojiao didn't have time to process the mixed feelings of being called "mom" by a child she had known for less than half a day before she overheard the crowd's discussion. Although they lowered their voices, the rural folks' idea of whispering was still louder than city girls' normal conversation, making it clear they were openly gossiping right in front of her.
Hey! I've got a bit of a temper!
Jiaojiao's eyebrows shot up, and she almost wanted to snap at these busybodies. But seeing Zhibing, she managed to rein in her temper, smiling gently. "Yes, I'm Jiaojiao. I just married Pengcheng today, so now I'm the mother to Zhibing and his siblings."
"My mother-in-law was so thrilled about our wedding that she insisted on giving us this gift. I said it wasn't necessary, but she wouldn't hear of it. She's just too kind."
"We're not having a big wedding since it's our second marriage, and we don't really have the means for it anyway. But we'll still accept gifts from our neighbors. I'm curious, what do you all plan to give us as a wedding present? Even a head of garlic would be appreciated!"
