C17 I will Divorce That Vixen!

Pengcheng immediately forgot his doubts about Jiaojiao. "You go inside."

Jiaojiao widened her eyes. "What do you mean?"

Pengcheng nudged her toward the house. "It's not good for your reputation to be involved. Besides..."

He gave a wry smile. "She's here because of me."

Jiaojiao blinked, unsure of his meaning. Could there be some deep-seated grudge between him and his mother? She thought about Pengcheng's previous wife, who reportedly died of illness while he was still in the military. He had to leave the service for the sake of their child...

Hmm, it all seemed so complicated.

Jiaojiao felt like she had a thousand questions buzzing in her mind, but she couldn't ask them. Still, she was confident that if Pengcheng wanted to build a life with her, he'd eventually share his secrets.

With that thought, Jiaojiao willingly went inside and closed the door to the main room, though she still intended to listen in.

Just as she shut the door, the front door was kicked open.

Jiaojiao silently felt sorry for the door. It had taken quite a beating today. How many times had it been kicked now? Maybe she should go and take the Zhao family's door instead? Their door was pretty nice, even if it was old. It was painted black and still looked quite impressive.

In the yard, Mrs. Zhao entered with her two daughters-in-law. Zhao Pengcheng looked at the four of them, who seemed ready for a confrontation. "What brings you here?" he asked.

His eldest sister-in-law wore a pained expression. "Pengcheng, you can't just forget your mother after getting married. Look at the wife you've chosen! She's even taking things from our home. She's nothing but trouble, and you should get rid of her..."

The second sister-in-law was less dramatic but still concerned. "Exactly, Pengcheng. If she's this bad to her mother-in-law, how can she be good to the kids? You have four children to think about. Even if you don't consider our mother, think about the kids..."

Yuh Jiaojiao, watching through a crack in the door, couldn't help but pinch her leg to keep from laughing. The sisters-in-law's performance could win them first place in an over-the-top acting contest.

Zhao Pengcheng ignored his sisters-in-law and turned to his mother. "Mom, is this how you feel too?"

Mrs. Zhao was fuming. "Don't call me Mom. I don't deserve that title; it shortens my life."

"Let me tell you, Zhao Pengcheng, return my pot and my chicken, or I'll act like I never had a son. And get rid of that woman. She looks like trouble, not someone who can settle down and live a proper life."

Pengcheng closed his eyes slightly, feeling the sting of his mother's indifference.

Mrs. Zhao and her two daughters-in-law noticed Pengcheng's eyes shut and grew impatient. Mrs. Zhao, especially, took charge, instructing them, "Eldest, go to the kitchen and bring out our pot. We can't let this little brat have it easy. And you, the younger one, take our chickens away. Who knows if they've caught some disease..."

When Pengcheng opened his eyes again, any trace of warmth was gone. "Mom, do you remember what I said when we divided the family assets?"

Having been on the battlefield, he usually kept his demeanor in check, but now his presence was commanding. Even Mrs. Zhao, despite being his mother, found it overwhelming and stepped back. The daughters-in-law didn't dare move and instinctively hid behind their mother-in-law.
