C5 This Woman Is Different!
Three little kids quickly hid their heads under the blanket, leaving only their eyes peeking out.
The oldest one spread his arms wide to shield the younger ones, nervously staring at Jiaojiao. "W-what do you want?"
Jiaojiao widened her eyes, putting on a fierce expression. "What do I want? I'm here to eat kids! I heard they're tender, bones and all, crunchy in one bite—"
She opened her mouth wide, pretending to take a big bite.
"Waah..."
Before the oldest could react, the three little ones burst into tears.
"No, don't eat us."
"We don't taste good."
"Please, we don't taste good, don't eat us."
"Waah..."
The oldest shot Jiaojiao a fierce glare and hurried to comfort his siblings. "She won't eat you, she's just kidding. Eating kids would get her in big trouble, she wouldn't dare. Don't cry."
Jiaojiao was taken aback.
Are kids really this easy to scare? She remembered the kids she met later on being so bold and clever. Was she mistaken?
What if they end up resenting her? They're all going to be living under the same roof.
Feeling at a loss, Jiaojiao reached into her pocket and found five or six pieces of fruit candy.
The original Yuh Jiaojiao's personality was quite complicated. She was so infatuated with the male lead that she was willing to give him everything she had. She even snatched candy meant for her nephews and nieces to give to her crush. The candies in her pocket had been there for three or four days.
Thinking about this reminded her that her clothes hadn't been washed in five or six days, which made her feel a bit queasy. But she couldn't worry about dirty clothes right now; she needed to keep the kids happy first.
Quickly, she took out four candies, unwrapped them, and popped one into each child's mouth. "Is it sweet?" she asked.
The four kids stayed silent. The youngest pair, identical twins, covered their mouths with their little hands, afraid she might take the candy back. The eldest tried to say something, but with his mouth full, she couldn't understand him.
Suddenly, there was a rumbling sound. The eldest's face turned red, and he clutched his stomach. Yuh Jiaojiao realized the kids probably hadn't eaten yet.
Judging by the sun, it was around nine or ten in the morning. Jiaojiao decided to head to the kitchen to boil some water. They didn't need to eat too much now, or they wouldn't have room for lunch. A little water with some sugar, along with the cornbread she brought, would be enough to tide them over.
There are four kids, and they're too young to only eat coarse grains. Thankfully, she had three eggs. She could make egg water with a bit of sugar for each of them, which would be nice.
When Zhao Pengcheng returned, he noticed Jiaojiao's dowry chest still in the yard, while she was already in the kitchen boiling water. He felt a bit conflicted.
This woman seemed completely different from the Jiaojiao everyone talked about. If it weren't for the fact that the Yuh family hadn't mentioned anything, he might have thought Jiaojiao had been replaced by someone else.
Zhao Pengcheng stood silently at the kitchen door for a while, seeing Jiaojiao busy and ignoring him. He decided to move her dowry chest into the house.
It was rare for a bride to have a dowry these days. Many families considered it impressive to send a daughter off with just a quilt and a mattress. In poorer circumstances, they couldn't even afford that, and the bride would bring only her old clothes.
