C6 Chapter 6
Boyan heard Duu Luo say that and stared straight at her, his eyes shifting slightly as if he were turning something over in his mind.
Under that look, Duu Luo grew uneasy. A flicker of fear rose in her chest, and her body actually started to tremble.
“I’ll do it.”
Just when Duu Luo was about to give up—sure he wouldn’t agree—Boyan said the four words that made her light up: “I’ll do it.”
“Then we’re friends from now on. And when a friend’s in trouble, you’ve got their back.”
Duu Luo took two steps forward, wanting to shake his hand. She didn’t expect Boyan to dodge her. Embarrassment washed over her, and when her gaze met his, she saw it—resentment in his eyes.
Resentment? What was that about? Why was he looking at her like that—like something out of a nightmare?
“Duu Luo, I’m agreeing to this not because I’m grateful,” Boyan said. “It’s because it’s what you should’ve done. I haven’t forgotten what you did to me—not for a second. But since you helped me today, I’ll act like those things never happened. Do something like that to me again, and don’t blame me when I show you no mercy. I’m not a good person. When someone tries to hurt me, I usually only do one thing: I kill them. Because the only way I’m safe is if the people who want me dead are gone.”
Boyan stepped forward and clamped his hand around Duu Luo’s. Pain shot through her wrist like it was about to snap, though it didn’t last long.
When Boyan saw how pale her face had gone, he let go.
“I know what I did before put you in a terrible spot, so I’m doing this today to apologize.” Duu Luo lowered her head, not daring to meet his eyes. Even though those things hadn’t really been her doing, the moment she faced him, she still felt guilty. “I was too young back then. I didn’t understand a lot. But it’s different now. I want to make up for what I did. I hope you’ll give me a chance. I won’t let you down. I can help you, too.”
This way of talking to people really didn’t suit her, Duu Luo told herself. But the moment she thought about finishing every task—and ending up with a genuinely great boyfriend in real life—she swallowed the irritation and pushed it down.
She just hoped this task could wrap up fast so she could move on to the next one. The sooner she finished, the sooner she could get back to the real world.
“Whether you change or not has nothing to do with me. Just don’t get in the way of what I’m doing.” Boyan glanced at Duu Luo. Somewhere deep down, something in him softened—only a little. “If you’re sincere with me, I’ll treat you like a brother.”
A brother? You’re going to treat me like your brother?
Seriously? I’m trying to be your wife. A brother—give me a break. I’m not even a guy.
Boyan, is your head made of wood or something? You’re really calling a woman your brother? Do you just not have a romantic bone in your body? Fine—when you finally fall for me, I’ll make you pay for this.
“Look, I’m not mad about what you said,” Duu Luo said, planting her hands on her hips and glaring at Boyan. “But you do realize that when you tell a girl you’ll treat her like a brother, you ever stop to think how that’s going to make her feel?”
