C147 The Mutated Zombies Attacked and Everyone Fought for Their Lives!(1)
Before Tang Bing and Jiang Feng could get a word in, Zhao Dagang and Liu Chen were already at odds.
"Looking at the big picture, Jiang is the best fit for team leader!" Xu Rou, usually the quiet one, chimed in.
"Excuse me!" Qin Mengli, who had been sticking close to Tang Bing, stepped forward, "It doesn't matter who you are or what experience you have. Here, Tang Bing calls the shots! You're welcome to join our team and be part of us, but you'll follow Tang Bing's lead. If that doesn't work for you, then there's no point in teaming up! We're all survivors here; let's part on good terms if we have to."
"You've got quite the following, huh?" Jiang Feng said, looking at Tang Bing with a hint of surprise.
"This is my team," Tang Bing said, maintaining his composure despite Mengli's unexpected support.
"In times like these, only by working together can we survive!" Jiang Feng assessed Tang Bing. "But tell me, have you ever served in the military?"
"No," Tang Bing answered coolly.
"Are you a cop, then?"
"Nope."
"Maybe a big-shot executive before all this?"
"Not at all! Just an average Joe."
"Let's be real!" Jiang Feng said with a smile, "For a young guy like you to come up with that zombie-fighting tactic is impressive! But leading a team to survive in this apocalypse isn't easy. You might have had a smooth run so far, but without a seasoned leader, one small slip-up could mean disaster for everyone. I won't claim to be the best out there, but I've honed my skills over many years in the military. If you trust me, let me take the reins. I can't promise the moon, but I can assure you that in a crisis, you'll run first, and I'll hold the line. And I'll make sure resources are shared fairly—no biases. Above all, our team will treat everyone equally, with no discrimination or bullying."
"Did you hear that? Jiang is the ideal choice to lead. Stick with us, and you won't have to worry about a thing! Plus, Jiang will be at the forefront against the zombies, ensuring your safety!" Liu Chen gave him a thumbs-up. "Now's not the time for child's play. Make the smart choice!"
The trio across from them fixed their gaze on Tang Bing's group, awaiting a response.
"Bing, you can't say yes to them!" Zhao Dagang murmured urgently into his ear, "We only trust you!"
With all they had been through, and Tang Bing's demonstrated capabilities, his resolve was unshakable.
Qin Menglu and Liang Hui also stood resolutely behind him. Outsiders may not have been aware of Tang Bing's prowess, but they knew it all too well!
Just as Tang Bing was about to speak, he sensed something rapidly approaching. He swiftly hoisted his Wolf Fanged Mace into a combat stance.
Tang Bing's movement served as a cue, prompting Zhao Dagang to ready his weapon as well, though he mistakenly assumed the impending threat was the three individuals before them.
Qin Mengli and Liang Hui, despite their fear, clutched their iron swords, their hands quivering.
"Friend, is this really necessary?" Jiang Feng's brow furrowed at the posture of the four before him. He gestured for Liu Chen and Xu Rou to step back and tightened his grip on his crowbar.
Of the four, the two women clearly lacked combat skills, evident from their stance and the look in their eyes, posing no real threat. The only ones with any semblance of fighting ability were the young man and his naive companion.
Yet, Jiang Feng doubted they would be a match for him. Despite his surprise, he remained unconcerned.
"You're being offered a chance to join us out of kindness, and yet you're so ungrateful!" Liu Chen brandished his pry bar, his voice icy, "Don't think you'll win just because you outnumber us. Jiang Feng alone could take you all down!"
"I don't want to see our own kind fighting each other, so let's not be rash!" Xu Rou declared, her expression stern as she prepared for battle.
Both groups were on edge, a fight seemingly inevitable.
Tang Bing realized there was a grave misunderstanding, but there was no time to clarify. The massive figure he had sensed was already at the town hall, having burst through the main gate and was now hurtling towards them at an alarming speed.
It had to be the mutant zombie. But why had it come here?
That's it! The mutant zombie must have sensed them when Jiang Feng and Liu Chen made their escape!
By now, the behemoth had reached the hall and, with a powerful leap, lunged upstairs.
Xu Rou, nearest to the corridor railing, was in its crosshairs!
Despite his uncertainty about whether he could trust the trio, Tang Bing wouldn't stand by and watch a zombie take a life right before his eyes!
In a split-second decision, he swung his mace and charged toward Xu Rou.
"Looking for trouble?" Liu Chen bellowed, seeing Tang Bing's sudden move on Xu Rou, and charged at him.
Jiang Feng, equally startled, quickly moved to assist Xu Rou.
But Tang Bing's speed was otherworldly, surpassing that of any human. In just a blink, he was before Xu Rou, lifting his foot and sending her tumbling to the ground.
Too fast! The same thought raced through the minds of Xu Rou, unable to react, and Jiang Feng and Liu Chen, too late to intervene.
Xu Rou's eyes narrowed at the sight of Tang Bing's icy expression and the menacing mace in his grip. "Damn it!" she thought. With his speed, she feared she stood no chance.
Who was this man? How could he move so swiftly?
Amidst Xu Rou's panic and as Jiang Feng and Liu Chen desperately made their way to her, a dark, humanoid figure emerged outside the railing, clawing at the air.
"Bang!" Tang Bing had preemptively swung his mace, striking the massive creature's head with brutal force.
The dark figure let out a piercing screech, its body soaring backward before crashing onto the hall's granite floor.
Jiang Feng and Liu Chen, startled by the sudden appearance of the beast, froze, their clubs hanging in the air.
Zhao Dagang, attempting to lend a hand, managed to halt his mace mid-swing, standing dumbfounded, unsure of what had just unfolded.
Remarkably, the creature rose from its fall without a scratch and agilely scaled the pillar, advancing upstairs with the ferocity of a wild gorilla.
Without hesitation, Tang Bing bolted toward the creature, his wolf-tooth club at the ready.
If he still didn't get it, he'd be as dense as a pig!
Though I had no idea how Tang Bing knew a monster was launching a sneak attack, it was clear he wasn't after Xu Rou, but rather trying to rescue her. We all got it wrong!
Xu Rou was momentarily taken aback, then quickly got to her feet and looked back at Jiang Feng and Liu Chen.
The trio exchanged glances, piecing together the events that had just unfolded.
"A mutant zombie?" Jiang Feng, clearly a man of some experience, said, "Friend, thanks!"
Tang Bing didn't reply. As soon as the mutant zombie showed itself, he swung at it with all his might.
"Bang!" The creature's head took a brutal hit, its flesh a mangled mess, yet it wasn't a fatal blow. Prepared this time, it clung to the pillar with its legs and, as Tang Bing's strike landed, it grabbed the mace, indifferent to the spikes piercing its palm, and wrested it away, tossing it aside.
Tang Bing was quick, but not particularly strong. The zombie's tactic had taken him by surprise.
"Hiss!" With Tang Bing's weapon now in its possession, the zombie spat out a revolting, long tongue that coiled around Tang Bing's throat like a noose.
Startled, Tang Bing frantically tried to free himself from the zombie's grip, but the tongue only tightened, turning his face beet red as he gasped for air.
"Damn it!" Jiang Feng bellowed, charging in to slam the stick down on the zombie's tongue.
"Hiss!" The tongue was punctured, but the mutant zombie seemed unfazed by the pain. It was enraged, though, at being attacked. It let out a fierce roar, still strangling Tang Bing with its tongue, and scuttled into the corridor, barreling towards Jiang Feng.
Liu Chen and Xu Rou joined the fray, wielding their sticks alongside Jiang Feng to pummel the mutant zombie. But the creature took the blows to its head without flinching, swept Liu Chen aside with a flick of its hand, and then turned its open arms toward Jiang Feng and Xu Rou.
