C36 Dagang, Who Had Tested the Heart of the Person, Was Dumbfounded. Tang Bing Was Helpless.
The storage room at the logistics department must contain the best resources the police station has to offer!
In addition to two pistols, a silencer, over a hundred pistol bullets, and various pistol parts, Tang Bing opened all the boxes and found 243 shotgun shells, 89 shotgun cartridges, 44 sniper rifle rounds, 163 submachine gun bullets, three standard-quality pistol barrels, two standard pistol accessories, and one low-quality pistol stock.
The haul was decent, though it lacked any additional firearms—just some bullets.
With the parts he found, Tang Bing quickly assembled another standard-quality pistol.
He couldn't hide his slight disappointment at not finding a submachine gun or sniper rifle. It seemed odd to him that such a large police station would only have a few pistols and some bullets and parts.
But considering the entire police force was gone, with only a few dozen people turned into zombies, it made sense. After the zombies appeared, most of the officers likely mobilized en masse, taking their weapons to aid the nearby residents. Finding these pistols, parts, and bullets was quite fortunate.
Tang Bing reminded himself to be grateful. He took out a fine pistol, fitted it with the silencer, and slipped it into a holster on his waist, perfectly positioned for quick access with his right hand.
He wished there were more logistics departments in the station, but Tang Bing knew he was getting ahead of himself.
Upon reuniting with Zhao Dagang, he saw that aside from a bucket of pure water, Dagang hadn't found much. Without a system like Tang Bing's, it was impossible for him to discover the newly spawned loot hidden in drawers, cabinets, and lockers.
"Bing, didn't you come across anything useful?" Zhao Dagang, lugging the water bucket, eyed Tang Bing's empty hands and inquired.
"Who says I didn't?" Tang Bing responded, giving his holster a pat.
"What's that?" Zhao Dagang's confusion quickly turned to astonishment. "Bing, is that a gun? A real gun? You found an actual gun?!"
"Absolutely!" Tang Bing replied with a light laugh, "A real gun, indeed!"
"Can I take a look? I've never seen a real gun before!" Zhao Dagang, unable to contain his excitement, set down the bucket and gazed at Tang Bing with anticipation.
Over the past couple of days, Tang Bing had come to see Zhao Dagang as the epitome of straightforwardness and integrity. Despite their brief acquaintance, Tang Bing found himself trusting Zhao Dagang quite a bit.
In the days ahead, survival would hinge on having a reliable companion to lend support, not someone who would hold him back. So, without overthinking it, Tang Bing turned to shield Zhao Dagang's view and retrieved a standard-quality pistol from his virtual backpack.
He handed the pistol to Zhao Dagang, "Here, take this!"
"For, for me?" Zhao Dagang was taken aback at the sight of the shiny, metallic gun and hesitated to accept it.
"Yes, take it!" Tang Bing insisted, pressing the gun into his hand. "It's yours now."
"For me? A real gun? Are you serious? I've never even held a gun before, let alone know how to use one!" Zhao Dagang stammered, his heart pounding with excitement.
"It's quite simple," Tang Bing assured him calmly, "Just disengage the safety and you're ready to fire. Keep a firm grip on it, and don't lose it."
While speaking, Tang Bing squatted to adjust his pant legs, deliberately exposing his head to Zhao Dagang. If Zhao Dagang harbored any ulterior motives, he could have easily taken a shot at Tang Bing's head. In this lawless, post-apocalyptic world, killing Tang Bing would give Zhao Dagang control over Qin Mengli, Sun Meng, and all the supplies they had gathered. He could even leverage the firearm to recruit more survivors and build his own faction.
Yet, when faced with Tang Bing's vulnerability, Zhao Dagang showed no interest. His attention was solely on the gun in his hands, eagerly polishing it with his clothing as if to keep it pristine.
The thought of betraying Tang Bing, or even coveting the resources of Qin Mengli and Sun Meng, never crossed his mind.
Tang Bing remained in his stooped position for a good half minute before slowly lifting his head. Seeing Zhao Dagang's joyous expression, he finally let go of any lingering doubts.
If Zhao Dagang had harbored any malicious intent, that moment would have been his chance. But there was no reaction, just pure elation at receiving the pistol. It was clear proof that Zhao Dagang bore no ill will towards him.
Certainly, Tang Bing wasn't playing with his life. Had Zhao Dagang harbored any ill intentions, he would have been dead the moment he pulled the trigger—because the pistol Tang Bing handed him didn't have a single bullet in it.
Even with his trust in Zhao Dagang, giving him a pistol was still a gamble, so a test was necessary, regardless.
"Bing, you're incredible!" Zhao Dagang was oblivious to Tang Bing's recent test and was simply elated at handling a real gun. "The weight, the feel—it's nothing like a toy gun! This is what true romance is for a man! I couldn't be happier!"
"Hold off on the celebration for now," Tang Bing said, scrutinizing Zhao Dagang's gaze. After countless inspections that only revealed his guileless, straightforward nature, Tang Bing felt assured. He casually pulled six bullets from his pocket. "Your magazine is empty. It needs to be loaded before you can use it!"
"Oh!" Zhao Dagang, not questioning why his pistol's magazine was empty, eagerly accepted the bullets. "These are real bullets! It's my first time touching them; I've only ever seen them on TV! I know how to load them. You have to eject the magazine first... Huh? Why won't it come out?" He shook his wrist vigorously, jostling the pistol up and down, and expressed his surprise.
"You don't seriously think the magazine will pop out just by shaking it, do you?" Tang Bing's eyebrow twitched, finding Zhao Dagang's actions somewhat foolish.
"But that's what they do on TV!" Zhao Dagang protested. "The hero flicks it, and out pops the magazine! Then he quickly reloads..."
"Could you take a closer look at the gun before you say that?" Tang Bing said, exasperated. "If the magazine could just fall out that easily, wouldn't the police lose all their bullets in a chase? Don't you see the magazine catch? You need to release that first!"
"What's a magazine catch?" Zhao Dagang asked, puzzled. Then, spotting something near his thumb, he exclaimed, "Ah! Is it this?"
With a swift motion, he flicked it, and the pistol's magazine ejected as expected.
Zhao Dagang clutched the pistol and empty magazine, laughing with excitement, "I get it now! I finally get it! So that's how it works!"
"Keep it down!" Tang Bing quickly shushed him, though he couldn't help feeling a bit exasperated.
Zhao Dagang wasn't dumb; he just had a habit of overthinking and often missed the finer details.
Chastened by Tang Bing's rebuke, Zhao Dagang quickly realized he was being too loud, risking drawing the zombies lurking around the police station. He immediately lowered his voice, "Sorry, Bing! I got carried away..."
"Okay, okay," Tang Bing whispered back, "Load the bullets and I'll give you a holster. Strap the pistol to your waist. When facing zombies, use the fire axe if you can—save the gun for real danger. Got it?"
"Yeah, got it! I'll follow your lead!" Zhao Dagang accepted the holster from Tang Bing, still eyeing the pistol with glee.
"Remember, don't fire unless you absolutely have to," Tang Bing reiterated, concern in his tone, "Your pistol isn't silenced. Gunshots will draw zombies from all around. Only use it when it's absolutely necessary, clear?"
"Got it, loud and clear!" Zhao Dagang nodded emphatically. "I won't use it unless you give the word."
"That'll work," Tang Bing said, a bit more at ease. After watching Zhao Dagang load the gun and secure it in the holster, he nodded, "Come on, let's finish searching the rest of the rooms."
"Right behind you!" Zhao Dagang quickly crouched down to hoist up a bucket full of purified water.
Tang Bing sighed in frustration at the sight. "Can you leave the bucket here for now?"
"Why?" Zhao Dagang looked confused.
"We're heading upstairs to search," Tang Bing explained, "Are you planning to lug that bucket with you?"
"I'm not tired!" Zhao Dagang grinned, "No problem at all!"
"It's not about whether you're tired," Tang Bing said, barely suppressing an eye roll, "Do you think someone's going to steal the bucket? What, a zombie? They'd have to make it inside first! Carrying that bucket up and down is a waste of time and slows us down. We've got to search both the police station and the supermarket today. Just leave the water here, and we can grab it on our way back, okay?"
Upon hearing that, Zhao Dagang's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "You're right! I got carried away just now, all I could think about was this gun!"
"We're not on vacation here. Our lives could be at risk any moment!" Tang Bing had fully trusted Zhao Dagang, but he couldn't help feeling frustrated by his occasional foolishness. If they all acted as recklessly as Zhao Dagang in the face of those man-eating zombies, they'd likely all end up dead.
"Sorry, Bing-ge! My bad!" Even though Zhao Dagang was several years Tang Bing's senior, he acted like a clueless younger brother around him. This left Tang Bing at a loss for words.
"Enough! Drop the bucket and let's comb through this police station. We're taking all the supplies we can carry!" Tang Bing said with resignation, "No time to waste. You don't want to get trapped here by zombies, do you?"
"No way!" Zhao Dagang responded, quickly setting the bucket down.
