Emily sat in front of Daniel and looked down at her paperwork. Her job interview had already lasted a little longer than usual because she wanted to make sure that everything went smoothly. The fact of the matter was that she needed the job, and she didn't want to jeopardize things by being late or not knowing what to do.
She scanned through the pages that Daniel gave her and then put them down on top of the kitchen table. She picked up another stack of papers and began to look at the forms. She was trying to understand each page, but she had no idea what she was looking for. Several questions were about her health, her past work experience, and her references.
"Are these forms supposed to be filled out?" She asked.
Daniel nodded his head and replied, "Yes, they are."
Emily sighed and continued to read the documents before her.
A few minutes later, Emily finished filling out the forms and handed them back to Daniel. He looked at the forms briefly, then he put them in the trash can, and he said, "Let's get started with the interview."
Daniel got up from the chair and walked over to the living room area. He turned on the television and sat down in front of the large screen. Then he gestured towards the couch next to him, and she nodded her head and followed him into the living room.
"I have a couple more questions for you," Daniel explained, "but I need to make sure that you understand how things work here. Do you mind if we go through the nanny manual first?"
Emily shook her head and replied, "Not at all."
He grabbed a pen and paper, then he wrote down some instructions on one of the pieces of paper and handed it to her. "Here is the official nanny manual," Daniel explained, "and it will tell you everything that you should know about being a part-time or full-time nanny for my baby."
Emily took the paper and read the directions. She understood what the paper said, so she looked up at Daniel and said, "Ok, now let's talk about your daughter."
"Sure," He replied.
"How old is she?" Emily asked. "Is she going to be walking soon? Can you show me where the baby gates are located in case she starts crawling around the house?"
Daniel smiled, "She just turned two years old, and she is starting to walk but not very well yet. It's been a little difficult getting her to use her feet as her main source of transportation instead of her hands because they're always busy holding onto stuff. I'm actually surprised that she has learned to do it this fast."
"Do you think that she'll be ready to start using the toilet soon?" Emily asked.
Daniel shook his head and said, "No, not for a while. She isn't really showing any signs that she wants to stop wearing diapers. In fact, it seems like she doesn't want to learn how to use the bathroom at all. I've tried to teach her to go potty on the toilet, and she hasn't seemed interested in learning."
Emily frowned and said, "That sounds pretty normal. Babies usually don't get the concept of going potty until they're closer to 3 or 4."
Daniel nodded his head, "I guess so. Well, the good news is that I can count on you to help me train my daughter to use the bathroom eventually. I hope you aren't offended by the idea of helping me out with that."
"It's fine," Emily replied, "if it helps your family, then I am willing to do anything for them. But right now, I just need to know if there are other things that you would like to discuss. Do you have a schedule in mind? How many days a week will I be working?"
Daniel looked down at the papers on his lap and said, "Well, we'll start off by having you work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. That way, I won't need to worry about you while I'm away, but I also understand that you may need to stay late sometimes, so maybe it would be better to add an extra hour to the end of each day."
"What do you mean?" Emily asked.
He smiled and said, "If something comes up and you feel like staying later than usual, I could give you permission to work for another hour or two. And then I'd compensate you more for that time."
Emily nodded her head, "Ok, that sounds great."
Daniel wrote down some notes on a piece of paper and said, "Let me show you what the nanny schedule looks like. This is basically the same thing that I did with my last nannies, so this should be familiar to you."
Emily took the sheet of paper from him and began to read it. It was written in his handwriting, and it showed how many hours per day she would be required to work as well as what tasks she would be expected to perform. Emily had already gone through a lot of these forms before, but there were still a few things that she didn't quite understand. She looked at the paper for several minutes, and then she put it down on the table.
Daniel smiled at her and said, "Do you want me to explain any of it?"
She shook her head and replied, "No, I think that I'm good."
He sighed, "I don't know if I can hire you. You seem to be very intelligent, and you have a high level of responsibility, but you're also pretty young. I don't know if you are ready for all of the work that I expect from you. And even though I am paying you $15 an hour, I know that it isn't going to go far enough for your needs."
"How old do I need to be in order to work here?" Emily asked. "And how long will you be hiring me for? Are we looking at a permanent position?"
Daniel shrugged his shoulders, then he said, "You look like you are in your mid-twenties, so I was hoping that you would be around for a while, but who knows what the future has planned. Maybe you'll find something better, and then I could always ask someone else to take over. The truth is that there is no real age limit for my family. We've had nannies as young as 17 years old and some that were in their sixties. I really can't tell you exactly how long you should stay because it's going to depend on a lot of different factors, and I'm not sure what those factors are."
Emily smiled and nodded her head, "That makes sense."
Daniel took another deep breath and said, "Let me just say this, if you decide that you want to work for us, I hope you will consider it a full-time job. This means that you would be working Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There might be times when I may need you to come in early or leave late, and I think that it is only fair for you to get paid for those hours too. But you will be allowed to work a little later than usual every now and then."
"What if I need to take time off?" Emily asked. "Would I still be able to earn vacation days?"
He nodded his head, then he replied, "Yes, you would. You can use your vacation days whenever you like, and they are yours to keep forever. So, feel free to take as much time as you want during the holiday season. Just make sure that you let me know ahead of time, so I can plan accordingly."
"Great," Emily said. "I think I understand everything."
Daniel looked down at his watch and said, "Well, it's getting pretty close to the end of the day, but we should probably finish up here before the baby gets hungry."
Emily nodded her head, and she picked up the papers on the table and placed them back inside the folder. She then grabbed the folder and put it into her bag.
Emily decided to tell Mr. Daniel everything in her mind to make him less stressed, "Mr. Daniel, first, I don't have a boyfriend, and I am not married, I have no kids, and I would like to stay here and take care for Lisa 24 hours 7 days per week. And about the money, it really matters but not as much as you might think. I would love to be around her all the time. I love kids, and I just wanted to tell you that I don't mind taking care of her in this mansion or out. I will always be with her if You wouldn't mind."
Daniel was a bit amused, and he didn't think that Emily was so ready and dedicated to her work as a nanny! He grinned, "wow! I am impressed. Thank you!"
Daniel then asked Emily to follow him to his daughter's crib upstairs. He had prepared a room for her next to his daughter in case his daughter needed her nanny at any time. "please follow me upstairs. I want to show you your new room and my baby's room. Lisa is in her crib now. As you know, she's a toddler."
Emily excitedly followed daniel upstairs. He opened the room for her, "this is your room. I hope you like it."
Emily nodded, "it's a lovely big room. Can you show me Lisa's room?"
Daniel opened his daughter's room slowly. He didn't want to wake her up, "and this is Lisa's room. I hope you don't mind that I made your room next to her."
Emily said instantly, "Actually, I do mind."
Daniel was shocked, "What? But why? You should take care of her!"
Emily nodded and walked closer to Lisa's crib, and once she laid her eyes on the gorgeous angelic face of Lisa, Emily pointed out, "Exactly, that's what I am talking about. I should take care of her, so how am I supposed to do this if I am not sleeping in the same room as her?"
Daniel didn't expect that! It was the first time to meet a nanny like her! Emily wasn't like the others! as if she wasn't only in love with kids, but she seemed more than that! as if she wanted to feel like a mother! "Are you sure?" He asked Emily.
Emily moved her fingers slowly to Lisa's smooth cheeks, "yes, sure, I want to put Lisa's crib and all her toys and other stuff in the same room as mine. I would love to be with her all the time. Unless you have something else in your mind."
Emily turned her head and looked directly into Mr daniel's eyes.
Daniel smiled widely, "Sure, I don't mind."
Then Emily placed a soft kiss on Lisa's head to do not wake her up until she could settle down and unpack her clothes. "great, could you please give me half an hour until I unpack my bag and settle down in my room. I need to change my clothes and prepare a milk bottle for Lisa before waking her up. also, I might need your help to put her crib in my room."
Daniel nodded, "Sure."
Emily then left the room, went to her room and closed the door behind her. She took a deep breath and exhaled, she had a lot to do! But she knew that she can handle it! she was ready!
"Ok Emily," she said to herself, "you are going to make this work!"
