C3 Chapter Three

James' Pov

Excitement crackled in the air, a tangible force like static electricity. My wolf thrummed within me, a wild, primal certainty coursing through its every fiber. "We'll find our Mate today," he rumbled in my mind, a possessive glint flashing in the depths of his mental eyes. The possessiveness sent a shiver down my spine - a delicious blend of exhilaration and trepidation.

"Easy there, buddy," I cautioned, forcing a measured tone into my voice. "Don't get your hopes up."

A low, frustrated growl rumbled through our connection. "Why wouldn't I be excited? It's our Mate! Our purpose, the other half of our soul!"

"We don't just stumble upon our Mates out of the blue, you know," I countered, a sliver of doubt worming its way into my own thoughts. "It isn't some fabled meet-cute."

"Sometimes I wonder about you," my wolf muttered, a hint of exasperation lacing his voice. "Too cautious, always overthinking things. We can feel it, can't we? That undeniable pull, that yearning in the deepest part of our being."

My fur bristled, a spark of indignation flickering within me. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Silence. My wolf retreated, leaving a hollow ache in its wake, a cold emptiness that mirrored the sudden distance between us.

Shrugging it off, though the ache lingered, I straightened my shoulders and entered the classroom with Drake at my side. "Any whiff yet?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper, his own anticipation a palpable presence.

"Nothing," I sighed, inhaling deeply, the air thick with the usual school-day melange of sweat, textbooks, and nervous energy. My gaze snagged on Hailey, her usual vibrancy dimmed as she flipped through a textbook, a frown creasing her brow.

"Is she your Mate?" Drake inquired, a flicker of hope, quickly extinguished, flickering in his eyes.

"No," I said definitively, the word heavy on my tongue, a strange pang accompanying the certainty. "But…"

"But you love her," he sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly as he moved towards his seat.

A knot formed in my stomach. Love. It was a complication I hadn't considered, a foreign territory amidst the wild, instinctive yearning for my Mate.

Just as I settled into my seat, a gaggle of girls surrounded me, their greetings laced with a forced cheer that sent a shiver down my spine. Their gazes, however, flickered towards Hailey, a silent warning flashing in their depths. The girls scattered like startled birds under the intensity of that unspoken message.

A hesitant smile played on Hailey's lips, barely a flicker that threatened to vanish at any moment. "Hey, James," she mumbled, her voice barely audible.

I managed a response, a ghost of a smile tugging at my lips as warmth, a warmth I couldn't quite explain, bloomed in my chest. As she lowered herself into the seat beside me, a flicker - was it mischief, or something more? - danced in her eyes. Before I could decipher it, she was across my lap, her arms wrapping around my neck in a sudden, unexpected embrace.

The sudden screech of the classroom door opening shattered the unexpected moment. Gasps and wide-eyed stares erupted around us. Hailey scrambled off like a startled cat, the flush creeping up her neck reaching a vibrant crimson. Thankfully, the teacher entered, completely oblivious to the mini-drama that had just unfolded.

Leaning in close, closer than propriety allowed, Hailey's voice, husky with a hidden desire, brushed against my ear. "Happy birthday, love," she whispered, sending shivers down my spine.

My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a response that both scared and thrilled me. "I love you," I murmured back, a fierce protectiveness coiling in my gut.

But amidst the whirlwind of emotions, another voice, primal and deep, resonated within me. _She's not our Mate!_ my wolf snarled, his voice laced with a primal urgency. _Don't let fleeting feelings cloud your judgment!_

_We can't just abandon her,_ I argued back, the internal struggle clawing at me.

_We have to find our Mate. It's destiny!_ the wolf countered, his tone insistent.

My inner turmoil was abruptly interrupted by a new voice. "Sir, may I come in?"

My head snapped towards the door, the world seeming to slow down. A girl stood there, her posture exuding quiet confidence, her gaze holding an intensity that sent shivers down a different path. And then, it hit me. A primal recognition, a jolt of electricity that surged through every fiber of my being.

_Mate!_ my wolf roared, the sound echoing in the sudden silence that had descended upon the room.

I coughed, the overwhelming surge of emotions stealing my breath. The air crackled with a strange energy, a tension I couldn't explain. Hailey's concerned frown swam back into focus, but this time, it was lost in the maelstrom of realization that had taken hold.

I forced a smile, my hand reaching out to grip hers. "I'm fine," I rasped, my eyes locked on the girl across the room.

This unexpected arrival had thrown everything into question. Hailey, my love, my heart ached for her. But the undeniable pull towards this stranger, my Mate… the future was suddenly shrouded in uncertainty.
